Resurrection Sunday
“Behold!”
Luke 24:36-49
In today’s passage, the risen Jesus appears to His disciples. The entire event can be summarized with one word. That word is “Behold.”
What are we being told to behold?
First, we are told to behold the risen Jesus.
I pray that you may see Him, touch Him, and come to know Him personally.
Second, we are told to behold Jesus who fulfilled the scriptures.
In verse 44, Jesus says to the disciples that what was written about Him in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms has been fulfilled. We, too, must behold this fulfillment.
Third, we are told to behold Jesus who promises the Holy Spirit.
In verse 49, He promises the Holy Spirit who comes from God the Father, and tells them to stay in the city until they are clothed with power from on high. We must behold the powerful Holy Spirit who is soon to come.
Because of the resurrection of Jesus, everything has changed. A new way has begun. Therefore, we must look at the Word again. The Word is no longer just a record of the past—it becomes our power. We must also look at the future again. Jesus’ resurrection promises our own resurrection and the coming of the powerful Holy Spirit.
When we look at all of life—our successes and failures, our identity, even death—through the lens of the resurrection, everything looks different. Why? Because Jesus, who fulfilled the scriptures, will also bring His Word to fulfillment in our lives, pouring out the power of the Holy Spirit, and giving us resurrection as well. Therefore, do not doubt, do not be anxious—wait with expectation. Everything will change.
1. Everything changes because of Christ's resurrection
1. Close your eyes and, just as Jesus appeared to the disciples after His resurrection, imagine that He is right here beside you now. Hold the hand of the person next to you (preferably your spouse, or someone of the same gender). Jesus’ hands, though they felt like human hands, appeared with a resurrected body that would not decay or die. As you hold that hand, imagine meeting that person again in heaven with a resurrected body. Stay like that for one minute, then share how you felt.
2. If we believe in the resurrection, what aspects of our lives can change right now? Let’s specifically share thoughts on how the resurrection might influence our lives today.
1. The resurrection is a fact, and it is a promise to all of us who believe in Jesus Christ.
This week, set aside time to practice living as someone with a resurrected body.
Observe and note what changes occur in your words, thoughts, and actions—and share them.
